Kelham Island Museum Visit

To support our local history study of Sheffield and build on our understanding of why Sheffield became the 'Steel City', Year 3 visited Kelham Island Museum.

The children learnt how Sheffield has grown over time, from a small village of workshops (little mesters) to the bustling city it is today. The children gained first hand experiences of Sheffield's crucible steel production and the dangers that went with it, as well as the invention of the Bessemer Converter, revolutionizing the mass production of steel. To top off the day, the children got to see the River Don Engine in action and witnessed the power of steam, which was once used in a rolling mill in Sheffield.
