PE & Sport Premium

From September 2013 the Government allocated funding directly to primary schools to support the provision of quality PE and sport.

The Department for Education has confirmed that the Primary PE and Sport Premium funding will continue at £320 million for the 2020/21 academic year.  In conjunction with this announcement, the DfE has also sanctioned any Primary PE and Sport Premium funding from the current academic year (2019-20), that schools were unable to use as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, can be carried forward to utilise in the next academic year.

The premium is ring fenced for activities and projects designed to get children active.  This gives primary schools the support they need to improve the quality of their PE and sport provision and increase opportunities for pupils to access regular exercise.  More information can be found by clicking here.

Vision for Primary PE & Sport Premium

All children leaving our school will be physically literate with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.

It is expected that we will see an improvement against the following 5 key indicators:

  • the engagement of all children in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles;
  • the profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement;
  • increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport;
  • broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all children;
  • increased participation in competitive sport.

Swimming & Water Safety

At Westways, swimming is taught in Year 4.

Swimming is an important skill and can encourage a healthy and active lifestyle.  All Local Authority schools must provide swimming instruction either in Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2.

The programme of study for PE sets out the expectation that children should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres;
  • use a range of strokes effectively (for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke);
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
